Assistant Professor of Politics Sumita Pahwa the Los Angeles Times about the Muslim Brotherhood鈥檚 political role in Egypt after the recent death of Mohamed Morsi, the country鈥檚 first democratically elected president. Morsi was the preferred candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, a grassroots Islamist movement that was outlawed in Egypt after Morsi鈥檚 removal from the presidency in 2013. Pahwa described the movement as 鈥渇ragmented and weakened geographically, generationally and hierarchically,鈥� citing the imprisonment of senior leadership.
