Eliot visited Hale in 1932, while she was an instructor at Scripps, and the two corresponded for almost two decades. The letters illuminated Hale as a source of longing and inspiration for the famous poet: According to the New Yorker, the letters “don’t just repeat ‘gossip and scandal,’ they produce it.”
