Artist, designer, and collector Howard Smith will be spotlighted at the Palm Springs Art Museum in a new May exhibit. Smith taught at Scripps for eight years and made his mark on the art world with his signature “less is more” Finnish design aesthetic.
“The Art and Design of Howard Smith” exhibit, spearheaded by the Palm Springs Art Museum Executive Director Adam Lerner will open May 10 and feature 220 objects, including sculptures, textiles, ceramics, and collages.
“He was a pioneer in merging art and design, and his story is a fascinating blend of cultural exchange, personal transformation and innovation,” Lerner told the Desert Sun. “Howard Smith was a household name in Finland for some of his works, but he didn’t have a gallery, and he didn’t have a lot of records for his art.”
