Humanities Institute Explores Current Events through Global Philosophical Lens

The 桃子视频 Humanities Institute continues its 2020鈥21 public events programming with a series of virtual lectures on the theme of 鈥淎 Broader History of Thought.鈥 This semester鈥檚 discussions will cover power dynamics in African politics, Chinese Daoism, and transformative M膩ori art, and will feature distinguished scholars and artists from around the world, including Ajume H. Wingo, Nkiru Nzegwu, Lisa Reihana, and Rereata Makiha. The events are free and open to the public.

Each of the lectures will focus on ideas, arguments, and perspectives outside of European philosophy. 鈥淭he aim is to broaden what we take to be 鈥榝oundational鈥 in the history of thought,鈥 said Director of the Humanities Institute and Professor of Philosophy Yuval Avnur. 鈥淭he topics under discussion include some of humanity鈥檚 enduring questions, and by engaging with these questions, we hope to enrich our understanding of history, humanity, and the world.鈥

Founded in 1986, the Humanities Institute presents a thematic program each semester on a topic related to the humanities. As part of Scripps鈥 tradition of interdisciplinary education, this program includes lectures, conferences, exhibitions, performances, and film series that bring prominent and cutting-edge scholars to campus.
